The essence of Craftsman architecture is expressed in this new residence. The narrow, hairpin-shaped lot and a public utilities easement placed considerable constraints on the buildable area. A height and setback variance was required to fulfill the owners’ request for an open, modern-functioning plan. Exquisite digital modeling and video renders were part of the effort that made the variance process successful.
Rustic ledgestone wraps from the backyard around the garage,
providing a sense of weight and support for horizontal custom lapped
siding above. Shaped wood rafter tails and gable brackets complement
balcony trellises and historically correct Craftsman window trim. The
variety of material and architectural features, along with a
stepped-back second story and further subtle variations in plane, create
an interesting and approachable street façade on the highly constrained
lot.
The house is oriented to take advantage of the natural light: morning light greets the dining room and library but diffuse light persists throughout the day. The library connects the master suite to the main vista point and also serves as a buffer between the primary living space for comfort and privacy.
The heart of the house is an expansive great room connecting the kitchen, living and dining rooms. The large custom island stands central in the space, it includes wine racks, a large cooking space and a seated bar promote socializing. This layout not only fosters a family atmosphere but allows direct light into the space from three sides. Craftsman style is represented throughout, with decorative beam ceilings and custom-designed doors and trim.
A children’s library fills the area below the stair, creating a light and cozy study-spot with open display shelves. A separate playhouse in the backyard is a miniature Craftsman home matching the main structure. The one-room structure opens out to a wrap-around porch with a broad roof overhang. This extra space is perfect for children’s play or an art studio. The additional garden storage is a well-concealed bonus. Team Labins enjoyed the opportunity to work on the construction of the playhouse with the patient guidance of the experienced framers.
