We designed an extensive remodel to the original home in 2001. The owners enjoyed their home until it was lost in the December 2017 Thomas Fire. Our dear clients approached us with designing a new home which enhanced their lifestyle, entertaining, and ocean views. We were inspired by their zest for life. The design concept evolved into a Modern Riviera home with flow from inside to outside spaces with ocean views.

The street-side asymmetrical curved stone tower and gabled study suggest an original building from an earlier era. The introduction of a modern steel beam entry cover and arbor provide weather and sun protection. The modern view-side of the home features expansive French and folding doors which open to the loggia, protected courtyard, and terrace. The asymmetrical loggia cover is supported by a substantial stone column towards the street and a slim steel column towards the view. The paired loggia rafter beams have a tension rod which enhances the openness of the structure.

The interior materials include stone, limestone flooring, and beams which unite the exterior to interior. The Great Room is a spacious volume with an asymmetrical vaulted ceiling and unique clear-spanning beam delineates the Dining and Living spaces. The kitchen is filled with light throughout the day. The kitchen island sink orientation and curved shape allows ocean views and conversation with visitors.

The home utilizes passive design and modern smart home technology. The orientation and overhangs help to keep the home cool. Dual glazed tempered glass windows provide thermal comfort while improving the defensibility of the structure. The mechanical system, lighting, and roller shades are programable and adjusted using a smart phone or tablet.
