Coming from gray and rainy Seattle, the owners eagerly looked forward to enjoying the sunshine of Carpinteria, and purchased a 1960's era "fixer". The living room had an oppressive low ceiling and was closed off from natural light and view. The structure needed a complete overhaul remodel. However, tearing down more than half the house would require a new complying two-car garage, which would eliminate the courtyard and restrict the view. This was not acceptable to the owners. Remodeling was the only option.
Our design proposal included the removal of the low roof and walls of the living room. We extended the floor and built new walls two-and half feet higher which added necessary volume. New sliding doors and windows opened up the Great Room to the light and view. The signature feature of the Great Room is the expansive mitered glass corner window set askew with flanking curved window and custom entrance door with coordinating curved lights. The East breakfast patio receives the morning sunshine while the West Terrace with trellis features a fire wall and glowing sunset views.
The open plan kitchen is filled with light and open to the two courtyards. Custom cherry cabinets in a mixed stain finish were thoughtfully designed to accommodate the owner's preferences for function and beauty. Central to the home, the Great Room kitchen is ideal for daily living and entertaining.
What began as a gloomy and oppressive structure became a bright and elegant contemporary beach cottage-a true transformation.
